My hometown . . .

Once known for its Quaker past and links to Richard Nixon, Whittier is coming to symbolize a new set of aspirations according to the Los Angeles Times today in Column One article titled: "Upscale Latinos Find a Home." The census now indicates 60% Latino residents in Whittier and the average income is greater than the Los Angeles County average. Whittier's City Council remains all white. There is an election next month that will likely leave the names and faces the same. If you noticed the campaign signs in my front yard, one is there because they asked and I said yes. The other sign showed up at the same time. I would likely give permission to any city council candidate who asks and would host another "coffee" with friends to hear their platforms. I would not, however, allow any presidential candidate to put a sign in my yard, except for one.
